Whether you come to the Lowcountry, of South Carolina, for the beautiful beaches at Folly Beach or the Isle of Palms or for the shopping, numerous museums, and cobblestone streets of Downtown and the Historic District, there is something for everyone in Charleston. For those who prefer a more suburban life surrounded by creeks, rivers & beautiful marsh vistas; West Ashley, James Island, Johns Island, Mt. Pleasant, or North Charleston might be more your style.
Charleston is blessed with a wealth of historic structures that have been transformed into offices, restaurants, stores, and homes. The City’s successful intermingling of business, home and garden make Charleston a beloved and very walkable urban landscape experience. The City of Charleston is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean at the juncture of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The Charleston area occupies 88.14 square miles, 7.6 miles of which are the downtown business district. The Charleston Metropolitan Area encompasses three counties: Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester.
The Charleston Area has a warm climate. In January the average temperature is 57 degrees; in July, the average is 88 degrees. Humidity averages 86 percent; rainfall, 52 inches per year.
